Hello and welcome to jasonnewland.com. My name is Jason Newland and this is the first in a series of sessions for chronic pain relief and I'm going to base this, I don't know why I'm laughing, but I'm going to base this on, I kind of copy the idea of my fairly successful series called Let Me Bore You To Sleep, which I do pretty much every day apart from weekends.
And so far I've done 17 I think. And it seems to be going down quite well anyway.
So I thought maybe I'd start a season, you know, for chronic pain. I'm thinking of calling it Let Me Bore Your Pain Away. So I don't know, it tickles me for some reason.
So that might be the name of these sessions. But I might call them something else. It just depends how I feel really.
The aim of these, this is kind of like an introduction, but I will also be doing a focus in as well on some chronic pain relief. The most important thing, well the two most important things is firstly don't ever watch or listen to my sessions unless you can safely close your eyes. That's really important.
The second thing is only ever listen to a chronic pain relief session when you can or watch a video when you can, when you know the reason or the cause for your pain. The reason for this, give you an example. For example, if someone listened and they had a pain in their stomach and they listened to a session to reduce the pain in their stomach and they haven't checked it out with a doctor, they might have appendicitis just as an example.
Of course, if you've got pains in your chest, seek medical assistance immediately. But this is for people with chronic pain. It's not really for a pain that just starts out of nowhere and you don't know the cause.
These sessions really are for people like yourself who are dealing day to day with a chronic pain issue and you know the cause of it. The cause might even not be known in a sense of you may have a pain condition, but the specialists can't give you an exact reason. And there's a lot of painful conditions that specialists don't actually know what causes them.
But now as we move forward into the age of being able to map the brain, be able to see how the brain is working and all the different neurological connections, it's becoming more, well, I was going to say more easier, but that's not really a proper sentence. But the specialists in neuroscience and the domain of brains, they're starting to find the reasons for perhaps somebody's chronic pain.
And also they can sometimes rewire the brain using electrostimulation devices.
I'm being very vague because I don't know how the technology works. So basically it's important that you know the cause of the pain. And it's very boring for me to have to keep repeating this every time I do a session.
And sometimes I might not go into depth. I might just say, find out the cause of your pain. That you know, always only listen or watch when you can safely close your eyes.
Again, that's another boring sentence, but it's important, you know, I could make it a really long, tedious sentence of don't use heavy machinery, don't drive cars, don't drive planes. You know, the list is endless. So I don't, I try to, well, back in 2006, when I was making CDs for a drug and rehab center, these were relaxation CDs.
And me and the person that worked there, we were trying to figure out what would be, to put a warning on the front of the CD, but how we can fit it in without it taking up the whole of the sleeve, the whole of the cover. And we came up with only listen to this when you can safely close your eyes. And that covers everything.
Because if you can safely close your eyes, then it means you're not driving, you're not using heavy machinery, you're not flying a helicopter. You know, you're not doing anything which needs your visual, your eyes and your head. So yeah, it kind of covers everything, I hope.
So the point of these sessions, I've done lots of pain release sessions over the years. The point of these is to have a continuation, a daily continuation, as I do with the Let Me Bore You To Sleep ones. Because if you listen to them every day, trust me, the title is real.
I will bore you and you will sleep. Or you just get bored and wander off. So maybe let me bore your pain away may not be the right title, might not be the right thing to call it.
But it's all about reducing pain, reducing the chronic pain. And this is something that I've been interested in for 20, over 20 years. Ever since I discovered hypnosis, discovered the whatever feelings we have, whether physical or emotional feelings as well, you have they can be increased or decreased by focusing.
And hypnosis is really just focusing, it's focusing on something. And the more you focus on that particular idea that I'm suggesting, and maybe that particular technique, a few things that I might suggest you to do or to think of, example, I might ask you to think of a yellow triangle in your mind, just a yellow triangle. And that's it.
So or a yellow triangle, just with a yellow outline, maybe white in the middle, maybe green, maybe red, you know, wherever. So as you focus on that, you're focusing on less on other things. I'll give you an example of something because I actually do watch, I try to watch documentaries when I can find them on chronic pain, and different techniques to reduce chronic pain.
Because even those techniques and ideas that are not even connected to hypnosis at all, are still connected to hypnosis. But people don't realize it because all hypnosis is, is focus. So as an example, there was this man on this BBC documentary that I watched online yesterday.
And he was having his he had severe burns on his legs. He was having his bandages changed every day. And it was really painful for him.
Technically, that's not chronic pain. That's acute pain. However, he knew the cause of it.
And it was, you know, is there was a different situation to acute pain like appendicitis. And this was the pain was caused by the treatment for the injury, the healing process. So what they did with him is they gave him these virtual reality goggle things that he looked through, and he played a game, some kind of snowman throwing snowballs at various thing game.
And he really enjoyed playing it. And the bandages were being changed while he was playing this game. And he actually he registered that he didn't.
It didn't bother him very much having the bandages changed. He said even though there were times when he could feel it, you know, just didn't bother him. He was too focused on what he was doing, too focused on the game that he was playing.
So that is hypnosis. That was focus. And that's what hypnosis is.
I guess it's a mixture between focus and belief, you know, wanting something to happen, expecting something to happen, letting it happen, allowing it to happen, you know. And I do I do find it quite not funny. I should I shouldn't be so funny in a mocking way.
But I realized many, many years ago that this fact, I've always classed it as a fact, but I saw a study, a new study saying that experts think that if you reduce the anxiety of someone that has chronic pain, then their experience of the chronic pain will reduce. It's like the most obvious thing in the world. It's amazing that studies are needed for stuff like this to just prove what they already know.
I've known that for a long time. You reduce the anxiety, you reduce the stress, and then you've got the you've got less pain. It's just it's standard stuff.
Many years ago, I'm talking in the 50s, probably 1950s, 1960s. Milton Erickson talked, might have been 70s, I think it was the 60s. He talked about pain and blocking it into three different bits, breaking chronic pain into three, the past pain, the present pain and the future pain.
If you can take away two of those, take away the future pain because it's not happened yet. That's taken away the anxiety of the worry about future pain. If you take away the past pain, just let that go because that causes the present pain to be more and more.
Because the expectation, I had it yesterday, therefore I'll have it today scenario, which is it's very natural to have those kinds of thoughts. But if you let that go, you're not dealing with what happened in the past. You're not thinking about what's going to happen in the future.
You just deal with what's happening now, which means you've only got a third, one third of those physical sensations to focus on. I imagine most people, if they were offered the chance to reduce the physical sensations that were unpleasant, to reduce those by two thirds, I imagine a lot of people would be really pleased at the idea of being able to provide themselves with actually putting that knowledge into action, allowing that new information to be absorbed into your mind.
Because once you know something, once you really know something, it's there.
I don't know about you, but I find that sometimes I'll hear something and I'll just kind of poo-poo it, maybe ignore it. And it might be a really good bit of information, but it goes against maybe my personal belief system, or maybe I've felt that I've done everything that I could do to help myself. And then somebody offers me a suggestion, regardless of how good it is or how useful, I might just dismiss it.
Because then I'm kind of facing the idea that maybe I haven't done everything that I could have done. Isn't that okay? I mean, there's always new information coming. And then another time, maybe later on, I'll think about that.
I'll start mixing around a little bit, that new idea of actually just letting the past go and the future hasn't happened. That's all you have to deal with is just what's happening now. And by focusing on something, just focusing really deeply on something, changes how you feel.
There's so many different ways to reduce chronic pain. So many. It is endless.
It really is. It's as endless as you are creative. You can constantly change and adapt what you do, how you think, to change how you feel.
You can do something different every single day, if you choose to do so. Now, the good thing about allowing yourself to let go of maybe preconceived ideas or belief systems that were unhelpful is that you open up the door to new ideas that really can help. So that's what this is about.
This is just me talking to you. And I'm focusing on chronic pain. I'm focusing on it.
That's the only thing that I'm going to focus on in these sessions. My Let Me Bore You To Sleep sessions, I just waffle on. But these will be more focused.
Although I will waffle on because that's the only thing I'm any good at is waffling. Waffle, waffle, waffle. And as they say, it's an old saying, the proof is in the pudding.
So I think the point of that is it doesn't matter what something looks like, what it smells like, you know, who's cooked it, if you've got a pudding there, and who really calls food puddings anymore. But if you've got a dessert, the only really way of knowing what it tastes like is by actually tasting it, by testing it. So that's what you're doing now.
It's by listening to me, listening to my voice, you can experience and test for yourself, how you feel, not just before, not just during, but afterwards, at the end of the session. Notice how you physically feel. Notice how you emotionally feel differently.
Because that's the point of these sessions is for you to feel different, for you to gain some benefit from listening to me. And it's not going to be the most exciting session ever. I'm not going to be telling you about stories of, you know, action movies or, you know, anything like that.
It's not going to be anything, you know, not going to be on the edge of your seat. Unless, of course, you're just getting up to turn the recording off, maybe. The whole point is, is just to relax.
And you can relax. That's the one thing you can do with me is relax and let go. And you can feel safe to do that as well.
And my stomach's making some weird noises for some reason. You can feel safe to do this because you know that any time you want, you can re-listen to this. You can hear every word I say.
I know exactly what I have said. It's not like you're listening to me once and then you think, I wonder what he, what did he say? You can re-listen or re-watch. And everything I say will be aimed towards the thing that we're focusing on in these sessions, these recordings.
The only thing is to reduce those physical feelings that have been disrupting your day or your evening or your life. And not everything needs to be done in one day. Not every issue needs to be sorted straight away.
It's a gradual process. I'm not really into that quick fix, instant gratification, hypnosis-y stuff as such. I like the idea of an ongoing supportive situation and environment.
So it's not just a one session. And the feeling that you get is accumulative. It continues to grow.
And you start to get connected to my voice. Start to get used to my coffee and a drink of water. That was a lot of water I just drank there.
So there are lots and lots of different ways to connect to my voice. Get to the same place. The thing is, everybody listening to this is going to be living a different life.
You've got different issues and I'm going to try and make this work for everybody. So that every day, you can feel more relaxed. Every day you can feel more of a sense of accomplishment for what you have achieved.
Because anything you do, any feeling you have of comfort, any part of relief that you experience is because of you. I'm just along for the journey. You're the one that's driving.
I'm just a passenger keeping you company. And you're the one who decides. After all, you're the one that decides to press play on this podcast or this video.
You're the one who's in control. And that's one of those things that I think with any kind of physical issue, there's that feeling of loss of control, which is difficult to deal with. And not control in a controlling way.
Control in a way where you decide. So this is an introduction. I feel an urge to cough again.
I do apologize for that. I don't normally cough when I do sessions. I don't like coughing.
But, you know, I'm half an hour into the session. And I don't have to start again or edit. No, I don't have to edit it.
I prefer things to just be natural. And when you listen to a session, you're hearing everything that I've said. You're hearing the background traffic, maybe, or a train or helicopter.
You might hear Andre in the other room, scratching or rattling his cage. You might hear my stomach churning, which I'm wondering why it's doing that, because it's time for bed, really. It's not time for food.
So you can just, before we go, just do a short session with a cough again. There you go. At least I'm not sneezing.
That'd be a sip of water. Yawn. So we'll do a little, this is a little idea, a little thingy that we can do.
I've done this before in the past. And you can just test it for yourself. I'd like you to focus on a part of your body.
A part that maybe there's some discomfort. I'd like you just to allow that discomfort to just rise through your skin, above your, that part of your body, just above maybe a few inches. And just hold it there.
And just notice what colour that is. What colour that sensation, the feelings that you've allowed to rise out of that part of your body, that's just hovering above you. What colour is it? What shape is it? And just focus on that.
That's all you need to do. Just focus on it. Just keeping it above your leg, or your arm, or your stomach, or your head, whatever part of your body that is, hovering above.
Maybe as you focus, the shape changes, just naturally, in its own way. Maybe that shape has a colour, and that colour also starts to change. And still focusing on that shape, that colour.
Notice the thickness or the thinness of it. Maybe, maybe there's even a sound connected to it, as it still hovers. Above your body.
Notice how it starts to move, just to the side of you, very slowly. Moving across your body, till it's no longer above your body. Maybe it just keeps moving.
And you can watch it moving, into the distance. Further, and further. Away, further, and further.
Further, from you. And allow that just to move into the far distance. Watching it disappear.
Gone. Now, as you focus back on that part of your body, you can notice the changes in how you feel. Now, notice the changes in that part of your body, focusing on that relief.
And that brings us to the end of today's recording. The first of possibly many. My name is Jason Newland.
My website is jasonnewland.com. You can listen to these recordings on my podcasts at SoundCloud, iTunes, Spreaker. You can also watch the videos on YouTube. Thank you for listening.
I'll see you again, and I'll meet up again with you, tomorrow. Bye.
