Hello and welcome to jasonnewland.com. My name is Jason Newland and this is Jason's Bedtime Storytime. Please only listen when you can safely close your eyes. This is an adaptation of a story from a storybook called Fairy Stories and Rhymes from Cicely Mary Barker.

So I'm not going to be reading it as it's written but it's based upon that story. Okay it's called the fairy's little gift that keeps on giving something like that. So here we go.

So the idea for this is really for you to maybe get yourself comfortable and if you're planning to fall asleep, laying down on your bed, maybe turn the light off. Yeah make sure that I clear the clear the room of any unnecessary stuff. Get rid of the chickens and the pigs.

Put them into the put them into their little pens and stuff and just whatever you need to do to make things a bit more cozy and quieter so that you can relax. If you've got any uh the television maybe turn that off. Yeah just make things nice and calm so that you can relax your body and your mind.

And just switch off. Now and as I tell the story you can allow yourself to drift off to sleep if you choose. It really is up to you.

So here's now the little fairy gift. It was about midnight. Roughly maybe two minutes past midnight.

Maybe five minutes past. Maybe it was ten minutes past. It's not really that important for the actual story.

I mean you could ask why am I even mentioning the time but uh it's just you know that's how the story begins. It seems to be focusing on the rough time when Jenny awakens. It's a story about Jenny and uh the story started by the way this is not just me talking about my own life.

And uh Jenny she kind of was tossing and turning and dreaming. And her left her left foot was kind of twitching a bit like flipping as if she was sort of swimming. And then she turns over and she goes to get out of bed but unfortunately she hits the wall so she tries to get out of bed the wrong way.

So she turns back and gets out of bed the normal way. And then she opens her eyes. Now boys and girls I would suggest you open your eyes first before trying to get out of bed.

Because then you wouldn't be um you know trying to get out where the wall is. And you wouldn't have people all day saying oh you're grumpy did you get out of bed the wrong way. Because you'll be saying you were actually yeah I did.

Now leave me alone. Thank you very much. And you know those times when you get woken up but you don't know what woke you up.

For example if you left fast asleep someone could blow a trumpet. So it could be in a garden they could just one big massive blow of a trumpet. And you'd wake up but you wouldn't know what it was that woke you up.

If they continued playing the trumpet then you'd kind of have an idea. Unless of course they play the trumpet and there's a really long note and you woke up while the the note was still being played. Then I guess you'd have an idea if it was a trumpet.

Or that it was a trumpet and the person in the garden and then you could chuck a bucket of water over them. Which is the right thing to do. I guess I don't know.

And I just want to know there was no trumpeters hurt in this in the telling of this story. And so that was the kind of situation that Jenny was in. She didn't know what woke her up.

All she knew is she had been woken up by something but she didn't know what. So that was really bugging her. What woke me up? Because there was no sound there's nothing else going on.

Unless she woke herself up. Maybe her left foot flapping around like banged her other foot and her other foot woke up and thought what's going on? And then just woke the rest of her body up. I don't know.

I wasn't there. And she started thinking had she been dreaming? Well she was asleep so she probably had been dreaming. It's the usual time to do such a thing.

And then she started thinking or had she really seen a cloud of big butterflies? What? Of all lots of pretty colors all flying out of the open window. So she wasn't sure if she'd been dreaming or she actually saw lots of butterflies and a couple of penguins flying out of her window. To be fair I think in that kind of situation you'd want to know the truth wouldn't you?

Because if it was a dream then cool.

But if it wasn't a dream perhaps you need to I don't know find out where all those butterflies and penguins are hiding. How did they get into the bedroom? And why did they suddenly decide to all leave the bedroom through the window just at the moment that you was waking up? Jenny thought to herself. So then she thought to herself must have been a dream.

Just must have been a dream. I mean it couldn't really be happening. After all why a penguin why would a penguin be there? Butterflies yes normal for millions of butterflies to fly in and out of houses and stuff but not penguins.

That's just silly. She said to herself. So she decided it must it just must have been a dream.

Couldn't have been real. I mean there she was in a really really quiet room just as usual it's just standard. Her mum was asleep in the other bed.

She wasn't woken up. I'm not surprised at the sound of Jenny when she tried to get out of bed through the wall banging her knee and going ow ow ouch ouch my knee. Why that didn't wake her mum up? Mind you she can sleep through a trumpet playing in a garden.

I guess she can sleep through anything can't she? So you know she like looked at her mum. Mum was asleep and there was the moon outside shining in winking through the curtains and yet Jenny felt really certain that something had moved. That there was something happened.

She wasn't sure what wasn't sure what but she was really kind of like probably 82.5 percent certain that something there had been some kind of movement near the window. So she sat up on the side of her bed and she crept to the like to the window while she was walking towards the window and she wanted to look out the window because she wanted to see well she wanted to see if there's any penguins out there because she figured that butterflies would fly away that the penguins would just land on the floor because penguins can't fly can they?

Unless it's a dream then penguins can do whatever they want I suppose yeah but then as she was walking towards the window she tripped over a large box. Oh what? She stubbed a toe on this large box and she was like oh no the knee was now annoyed because the knee she bumped was quite happy because the knee had all the attention.

Now the toe is trying to take the attention away from the knee so the knee and the toe were having a competition about who could hurt the boast. The toe obviously won because having a stump toe is pretty pretty painful stuff. So the toe won but the knee started to keep quiet thinking I'll get my revenge on that toe one day.

That damn toe was always banging into things making a big deal getting all the attention what about me? Look at all the things. What does a little toe do? Nothing. What do I do? I'm a knee you can't walk without me.

The knee and it started to turn into some kind of rhyming poem and then we went back and focused on the box which Jenny had banged into. So she looked down as you do I mean if you bang into something you wouldn't just ignore it would you? Just carry on walking and tripping over you'd stop. Her mum was still asleep in the other bed.

That seems a bit strange I mean lucky her if you can sleep through all of that noise all that banging and clattering and all that stuff then I imagine her mum was you know she had a really good sleep so she must feel quite refreshed on awakening but that's just a guess. So the box as she looked at it it had silvery handles and it was covered in this crusty it almost it was in the shape of a of a big poo.

You can imagine a whale doing a big poo and imagine that's a kind of like shape of this box very weirdly shaped and it had a key inside but the key was made out of a shark's tooth so there's a very strange situation going on there.

Weird combination very uh it's very ocean-y really isn't it? You've got the penguins you've got the the shark's tooth key and then of course the the big box made of um whale poo um so yeah so she looked at this box and she was like what's going on? She was almost spellbound you might say she just like is this real am I still dreaming?

So she looked at it and she got on her hands and knees and then all out and realized her knee was still hurting so she stood up again and then she got down and she just sat down on her buttocks and she she had a closer look and as she looked closer at this big whale poo box with the shark's tooth key she realized that not only was it a shark's a key made out of a shark's tooth but it was still attached to the shark she hadn't noticed a big

shark moving around and then a train went past in the background and it sounded lovely but it was a haunted train because she didn't have any railway tracks anywhere near her it was the ghost train anyway she looked back at the box and as she looked her eyes got bigger and bigger and rounder and rounder and she called out to her mum mama mama wake up wake up or come and look now her mama her mum woke up at once so why did that wake her up?

all the other stuff the ghost train the penguins the butterflies her banging her knee banging her toe and there's a shark splashing around like trying to get away from out get his tooth out of the lock of the whale poo box yeah her saying mama mama look at me suddenly her mum wakes up not very believable but it's okay we'll carry on i'm not here to judge so she says mama mama wake up wake up oh come and look at this there's a box on the floor it's made of poo

ooh ooh whale poo come and have a look come on won't you wake up mama wake up now oh so her mum did wake up and sprang out of bed the right way so she didn't hit the wall because um well she's just normal i mean most people don't try and get out of the bed the wall side do they but jenny was a bit um you know needed a little bit of help with some things so she said oh my mama a present from the fairies cries jenny pointing to

a label which was tied to a handle of her chest now of the chest the poo poo chest whale poo chest so she'd read it by the bright moonlight but her mum lit a candle to see better now i just want to point out that they did have electricity but the um the bills had gone up so much they decided just to use candles and go back to doing that again and uh yeah so let's have a look where are we on the on the little label which was attached to

the the box it said to jenny here lies a present from the fairies so this was you know she still wasn't sure if it was for her as i said um um not the brightest maybe and says how do i know it's for me the fact that your name's jenny and it's in your bedroom clue but her mum her mama said well jenny it's in your bedroom or let's see but then jenny says but it's our bedroom mama and she's a mum said well um i know it's it's not really

our bedroom this is your bedroom jenny don't you know i got my own bedroom i just sleep in here because last night it's a spare bed isn't it last night i farted and it was so smelly i just had to get out of the room so i come and slept in your room instead i'm hoping i left all the windows open so hope the smells got out by now jenny giggled thinking her mum was joking anyway let me have a look at the rest of this read this so you can

uh her mum was very surprised at this big box this big poo chest well poo chest because it wasn't there when she went into the room because her mum crept in there about two o'clock in the morning no because that would be two hours after this story began no probably 10 o'clock in the morning no in the evening rather it was earlier let's just leave it earlier what it's getting complicated so what she did her mum said well why don't you open it then then you can see what's inside and

jenny thought okay mama i will do that so she went to turn the key and the shark tried to bite her because she didn't realize there was a shark there oh come on how could you not know how could you not see a shark anyway eventually what they did is jenny and her mum turned they tickled the shark because everyone knows if you tickle a shark it rolls over and in doing so unlocked the the box or the chest so when the key was turned and they lifted the lid both

of them at the same time were very very astonished and they gave out a big a big like astonished sound something like that and it was so loud that great uncle jeremy heard and came hurrying in and all he had on was his nightshirt and nightcap what's going on everybody what's going on what's all the fuss about i was trying to sleep what what are you doing what what what's going on why use a candle for why don't you just turn the light on you weird lady and they said but

but great uncle jeremy there's a box in the room and it's it's made of whale poo and it's got a shark's tooth as a as a key and we had to tickle the shark so that it turned and opened the box and then we me and my mama we opened the lid of the box and when when we started to hyperventilate so what our mum did was um punched her in the back and that seemed to help and so and now we're looking into it and we're just astonished at what

we've seen aren't we mama yeah yeah yeah yeah that's right her mum agreed well the uncle jeremy walked up and he had a look in the box and was full of nothing but necklaces hundreds and hundreds of necklaces just all mixed and tangled together but it was on a tray and she lifted the tray up and there was more there's even more necklaces so it's like there was ones of all types of colors um um turquoise pearls opals moonstones ivory gold um you know you name it that's that was in

there i say you name it because i can't think of any others but there's lots and lots of different types of jewelry in the box so her mum said she stood there in astonishment and said uh are we all dreaming are we dreaming are we and jenny she had this sense that the necklaces might vanish as mysteriously as they had appeared magically so she rushed rushed to where did she go how she went she rushed into a little brother's a little room and his name was bobby she woke him up

and she she got him to come into the room and like have a look at this bobby bobby said i don't want to come out i always have a nice sleep but she said come on bruv i can't go i want to what i want to i want to show you something but i was sleeping why would you bother me why would you wake me up sister i was having a lovely dream i was dreaming of sandwiches on a beach and a nice cup of tea why would you wake me

up from such a wonderful dream and uh jenny said this is much nicer than a dream she said he said but i don't want to get up and get out of bed now bobby oh oh i will get so angry so angry with you bobby bobby then realized that she meant business so he got out of bed and got on his bicycle and he cycled into the next room he just loved bikes he didn't like to walk anywhere and as he cycled into the room he tripped over the the shark

and uh he landed head first into the into the shark's mouth and that was it he was gone so jenny looked at what happened there and thought oh she'll deal with that later she needs to focus on the necklaces besides she wanted his bike so now she had his bike and she wanted his room actually because it was it was actually a nicer room a bit smaller but there was something about the shape because it had a one of those skylight windows and she liked that because she was planning one

day maybe taking up astronomy getting herself a little telescope and you know mapping out the stars she thought that'd be really nice but she couldn't do that in a in a current room because she knew that if she got a telescope started looking out of a normal window the neighbors opposite would think she was being a peeping tom you know she'd worked it all out in her head you know we've all been there haven't we anyway bobby eventually climbed out of the shark's mouth and he said uh he looked into

the box and he said are they real and the reason he's talking like that because you know he was half eaten um i hardly dare touch them myself i don't i want to i want to touch them but are they real and jenny said why don't you touch them why don't you pick them up feel for yourself he said i can't i've got no hands so okay because the shark had eaten his arms if they if they are real our mom said our fortune is made we're rich so so rich

oh my jenny why should the fairies have given such a gift to someone like you but before she could answer uncle jeremy who hadn't really said much up to that point suddenly decided to talk what i say is this all of my long long long life i have read and heard tales all types of tales tales of giants and beanstalks and little people looking after a beautiful lady that eats an apple and falls asleep until some perverted prince creeps up on her and sneaks a little kiss while she's asleep and

then she wakes up and no actions no further actions taken i've heard lots of stories fairy tales fairies living in trees swans turning into caterpillars i've heard i've seen and heard lots and lots of those kinds of things but i never i never thought i'd actually see with my own eyes such an event in my own lifetime in my own house well technically uncle you're just lodging okay no need to be rude but what i will say is this whenever a fairy gives a gift there's always some kind of a

catch look at rumpelstiltskin and jenny's mother said rumpelstiltskin he wasn't a fairy why are you saying that what's that got to do with anything and he said no i mean look at him he's over there he's sitting on a chair and i looked over and there robin rumpelstiltskin was sitting in a chair smoking a pipe just staring really he had he was looking at his iPad watching YouTube videos and then he went on there's always a catch always a catch depend upon it you wait until sunlight before you do anything

so we should look at them tomorrow and then then we can then we can decide what to do next so they all decided to go to bed we go back to bed rather because it was cold i mean i don't know why our mom just didn't put the heating on but you know some people just they just won't put the heating on will they no the bills are too high you still need to keep warm no no i don't want to get no no you need to have the heating on

just you know it's important health is important no we'll just leave the heating off i'll just wear 14 14 jumpers six pairs of socks and i'll just i don't know live in a cupboard or something live in a cupboard what's that got to do with anything oh it's nice and warm in the cupboard okay fair enough so saying that they all just went back to bed almost as if nothing had happened and jenny went back to bed and her mom wrapped a big blanket around her to keep her nice and

warm through the rest of the night and because she was shivering but possibly more from excitement than from actual cold and bobby looked up from his counting i think there are 365 necklaces he said 365 i mean no one knew he was counting them i mean i always figured to myself what's bobby up to because he hadn't really been mentioned for a little while but that's what he was doing he was counting and jenny jenny got excited she said why um that that's that's just what i wished for one necklace

for every day of the year but i didn't really mean it you wished said her mom whatever made you do that did you see a fairy oh no mum i never saw any fairy though i did hear some some weird voices calling my name i was i was getting ready for for um mary's party the other night and i was putting on my necklace and i said to clarence that i wished i had a different one for every day of the year i never thought really any more about it um

but here they are they've just appeared it's almost like magic wow said her mom it's past my understanding i suppose you might as well just do what your great uncle said just go back to bed and wait for the morning they didn't get much sleep that night i'll tell you next morning the necklaces were still there and uh jenny was trying them on in fact they were all trying them on especially uh bobby he really liked them matched his lipstick great uncle jeremy in spite of all that he said earlier

in the morning that the next that nighttime he seemed more eager than jenny herself to see them and partly my maybe because he owed so much money to the loan sharks he thought he could maybe pay off his debts and still have enough money to um buy a trampoline for the garden but then as they were looking at the the the necklaces something very strange happened he slapped his knees and burst into a fit of cackling laughter and the sight of his old face with all his wrinkles and blemishes and

all that stuff and two teeth the rest of them started laughing too so they all had their own individual laughs and they were all equally wonderful and jeremy uncle jeremy collapsed into a chair wiping his eyes bravo bravo he said come give your old great uncle a kiss jenny this story's taken a different turn i thought i should read ahead before i kind of say anything else he had never said said such a thing before to jenny but she ran at him and um threw her arms around his neck while

her mum looked on in astonishment apparently she thought of frozen water thawing why was she thinking of frozen water thawing the ice had cracked and surely was melted away in the sunshine that made no sense at all but i'm reading it so hey what if that was just put in to make sure that whoever's reading is actually taking notice of what they're reading i know what i'll do i'll put some random little sentence in there which makes no sense whatsoever and see if they're actually taking notice or if they're just

reading it numbly at breakfast everyone started to sober down began to discuss what was to be done with this wonderful wonderful prize of all these necklaces 365 all free all theirs to do whatever they wanted with so uh uncle what's his name jerry jerry says uh if it gets known that they are here we shall have thieves without a doubt said the old man the children jenny said what do you mean doubt do you mean doubt he said no doubt doubt uncle do you mean doubt no jenny i mean doubt

uncle that's how it's spelt d-o-u-b-t you don't pronounce the b it's silent he said jenny why don't you be silent oh oh all eyes were on him when he said that she said how dare you this is the 14th century how dare you talk to a lady like that and then um uncle jeremy always had a way to deal with conflict especially with jenny what he did his he um he started dancing and he what he did he danced and he played the thong song and he danced he did the

thong song dance and that always amused jenny she'd always be there even from a little baby and still even today she'd clap her hands more more more i want more more dancing more more bum bitty bum bum bum the thong song more so um she got distracted and forgot about the argument but they decided they needed to find someone trustworthy in order to find out the cost the value of these necklaces so they were all discussing it and jenny thought to herself he's forgotten that there's one for every day of

the year i'm sure the fairies meant me to wear them not to just sell them or give them away but they did not like to say so her mum said they are certainly not safe here but after all they are jenny's so oughtn't they to be kept for her and she maybe till she grows up and it's not up for us to get rid of them they're hers that she owns them it was a present for her besides what a dowry for her when she marries dowry but jenny she was

like excited she wanted to wear them might not have a few to wear now and to give to people as presents maybe for birthdays and such like we'll see darling said mrs wilkie that was her mum we must just think it all through we can't rush into anything you and bobby must go to school as usual and not say anything about the necklace and i'll just you know go and find out if i can figure out the price or the cost or the you know how much they're all worth the

value that's the word i was looking for value so go to school you and bobby go to school and act as if nothing's happened okay mum yeah okay mum so but as she was leaving jenny plucked up her courage and says uh mother she said you know there's there is a jeweler in town called mr jewelry he's a jeweler you know and he's very kind i think he might be able to help well they took her to the jeweler and um the jeweler looked at the jewels you know at the

necklaces and he uh he started laughing and jenny's mama said what are you laughing for what's so funny what are you laughing for hey why are you laughing and the jeweler says well if i tell you you might not find it so amusing as i do go on then you might as well tell me i've traveled all this way well let me tell you uh i'm not sure you'll find it quite as amusing as i do but i will tell you anyway oh let me tell you these these jewels these

these oh blimey these these necklaces of yours hey they're made of whale poo just like the box they're worthless oh oh blimey this is made by day i've never thought this off this is wait till i tell everyone oh at the bridge club oh i'm gonna have to talk about this on Facebook what do you mean they're not worth anything they're useless i mean you can crumble them in your hand did you not try but who tries to crumble bracelets and necklaces and stuff no one does do they you don't

get a necklace and think oh i wonder if i can crumble it you put it on yourself you wear it you walk around you impress people you don't try and crumble it do ya well i suppose you're right but i'm sorry but they're useless it's completely pointless and you've wasted my time but i don't mind because it's making me laugh which was a very strange laugh indeed so uh jenny's mum didn't know what to do so what she did she was with uncle jeremy and uncle jeremy just out of the

blue said you know what uh mama jenny's mum no what do you want jeremy what what well i'm just going to say that uh you know you're my my brother's wife my brother's departed and he's not around anymore and today early on we were looking at the jewels that were made of well now we know they're made of uh whale poo but the way they sparkled and they brightened up your face and i realized for the time jenny's mama that you're a very handsome woman and i would like for you

to be my wife oh what are you talking about what do you mean be your wife you're like a brother to me but i'm not your brother am i i'm your husband's brother and your husband's gone yeah but behave we can't get married tell me why not do you not find me wonderful am i not the most perfect specimen of a male that you could ever imagine seeing well you're all right i suppose all right i'm wonderful but you do leave quite large gaps in between your sentences though don't you

that's a bit weird what do you mean i leave large gaps between my sentences no never mind there's no point um i suppose i have been quite lonely lately and i have noticed i have noticed that when you dance when you do the uh when you do that special thong song dance i do have a certain feeling that spreads through my um my toes let's say exactly that's why it's called the thong song it doesn't make sense what do you mean it doesn't matter oh okay so would you like to

marry me blimey that was a long i had no idea what you were gonna say i know i almost fell asleep in that gap blimey uh yeah i suppose something to do in it i mean we have to end this story somehow don't we yes exactly that's why i thought we should get married it's a nice ending to a lovely little fairy story oh yeah okay fair enough yeah all right then and later that day they both got married they went home and broke the news to jenny and bobby and

jenny was a little bit confused to start with bobby bobby seemed quite pleased i think he thought you know he had an idea that maybe something might happen between them and they all lived for at least another two years happily until the earthquake the end now go to sleep
